Swami Vivekananda Medical mission, Wayanad

Wayanad is a beautiful misty hilly abode of tribal population in Kerala. Following the principle of ‘Nar sewa, Narayan sewa’ started the Swami Vivekananda Medical mission by opening a free dispensary in Muttil, wayanad with an aim to provide better health care facilities to the Vanavasis of the hill in 1972.

After the arrival of Dr DD Sagdeo from Nagpur in 1980, the Mission has grown into a thirty bedded full- fledged hospital with three full time resident medical officers, 10 visiting specialists, 15 para-medical staff and a dozen helpers and volunteers. Through Mobile clinics and medical camps, the Mission could reach out the vanvasis in remote villages.

Dr Sagdeo is Swayamsevak from Nagpur and was asked by the then RSS Chief Shri Balasaheb Deoras and Shri Bhaskar Rao ( the then RSS Prant Pracharak of Kerala ) to come to Wayanad and join the Vivekananda Medical Mission . In the past 35 years, he has spent his life at the service of the vanvasis of the small hilly district of Kerala. CIMG3993

Under ‘Swasthya Mithra Scheme’ the mission train tribal youths in first aid and basic health and sanitation measures, and enable them to take care of the health needs of specific areas.

CMO of Vivekananda Mission, Dr DD Sagdeo found out the prevalance of Sickle Cell Anemia among the tribal population of Wayanad and notified the government and AIIMS authorities. The AIIMS initiated their first pilot project of Sickle Cell Anemia Control Programme in Wayanad with the mission as the NGO partner and more than 70% of the tribal population was screened. As the second stage of the programme, a free clinic is functioning in SVMM Hospital, Muttil with a sub-centre at Mananthavadi. Screening camps and health education camps are conducted in tribal villages. A research project with the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Shala to find out a proper Ayurvedic Medicine for the ailment is in progress. A South India Conference on Sickle Cell Anemia was organized at Muttil in 2005 and followed by a 2nd one, SCD CON 07 in February, 2007.

The Mission have organised 100 ‘Grameen Vidya Kendras’ and run few schools for education of Vanvasi brethren.

The Mission also take care of the economic upliftment of the area through Micro financing, self help groups, crafts unit etc.
